CSC 403: ANSWERS
- Difference between Hacking and Cracking
Hacking and cracking are both about gaining unauthorized access to a system or computer, but they are not the same thing at all.
Hacking is when someone tries to break into a computer system, but they might not necessarily have bad intentions. In fact, there are people called “ethical hackers” or “white-hat hackers.” These hackers are hired by organizations to check for weaknesses in the system so that they can be fixed before a malicious person takes advantage of them. These hackers use their skills to protect systems and make them safer. For example, an ethical hacker might test a website for security problems to help the website owner protect users’ data from being stolen.
On the other hand, Cracking is when someone tries to break into a system for bad reasons, like stealing information, damaging files, or disrupting services. Crackers are often referred to as “black-hat hackers” and they usually have harmful intentions. For example, they might steal your bank details or even crash a website just for fun or to cause harm. Cracking is illegal and can have serious consequences.
- Difference between Network and Internet
Network and Internet sound similar, but they are not the same thing at all.

A Network is simply a group of devices that are connected to each other so they can share information or resources. These devices can be computers, printers, phones, or even smart devices like fridges. Networks can be small, like the one in the house or at school. For example, in our house, we connect our phone, laptop, and other devices to our Wi-Fi router – this is a network. Networks can also be bigger, like in offices or schools where many people are connected to share files, printers, or even internet access.

The network is two or more connected computer which can share resource like a printer, an internet connection, application, etc. It is a collection of computer systems and devices which are linked together using a wireless network or via communication devices and transmission media.
The network provides connectivity between computers and devices within a restricted range where only one entity is controlled or authorized to manage the entire system.
There are different types of networks:
- LAN (Local Area Network): This is a small network that covers a small area like your house, school, or office.
- WAN (Wide Area Network): This is a much larger network that might cover a city, a country, or even the whole world. The Internet itself is a type of WAN.
- PAN (Personal Area Network): This connects personal devices like our phone, laptop, or smartwatch.

Now, the Internet is like a super network. It’s a global connection of millions of smaller networks connected to each other. When we use our phone or computer to browse the web, watch videos, or chat with friends, we are using the Internet. The Internet connects networks all over the world, allowing people everywhere to share information and communicate instantly.

The internet is also a type of network. It is a powerful network of lots of other networks that allow computers and other devices to connect to servers, allowing users to access the data contained on them. Rather than one computer talking to another computer via a private server like a LAN or WAN, users access other networks via an internet service provider (ISP). When someone goes on to a website, they are accessing a public interface for a system of servers that provide the information or services that the website contains. The host of a website may own the servers that contain their information or use another provider’s servers, depending on the size of the company and the type of service being provided.

The Internet (Interconnected Network) is a global system which use TCP/IP protocol suite to link various types of electric devices worldwide. The internet is a collection of interconnected devices which are spread across the globe. It is a network of networks that consist of public, private, public, sales, finance, academic, business and government networks. The internet is a type of network and called network of networks.
Let’s see that the difference between network and internet in a tabular form:
S.NO | Network | Internet |
---|---|---|
1. | Network is defined as the group of two or more computer systems. | Whereas internet is the interrelationship of a few networks. |
2. | The coverage of network is limited in comparison of internet. | While it covers large geographical area. |
3. | It provides the link between many computers and network-enabled devices. | While it provide connection among many networks. |
4. | The types of network are: LAN, MAN, WAN, CAN and HAN. | Whereas the types of internet is world wide web. |
5. | Through network, hundreds or a few thousands of computer system can linked simultaneously. | While through internet, millions of computer system can linked simultaneously. |
6. | It requires less number of hardware devices. | While it requires various hardware devices. |
