EBSU SUG Cracks Down on Extortion: “Protecting Our Students Is Not Negotiable”
EBSU SUG Fights Extortion as Students React in Fresh Comments

The Students’ Union Government (SUG) of Ebonyi State University has taken strong action to protect students from rising cases of extortion happening around the campus.
Yesterday, the SUG President, Chika Abraham Nwuhuo, led a team of top student officials on a sanitation and monitoring exercise. Those present included the Senate President Marvelous Elochukwu, Chief Judge Chidera Igboke, Director of Welfare Ken Justice Mbamoke, Senate Clerk Benjamin Ezeh Iduma, Treasurer Mgbada Friday Peculiar, the Assistant SSG, and other committed student leaders.
During the exercise, they discovered several heartbreaking cases of students especially freshers being extorted by some cyber café operators.
What Was Happening?
According to the SUG President, many café owners were charging students:
- ₦3,000 just to generate a Remita for acceptance fee
- ₦4,000 to generate school fee Remita
- ₦10,000+ in some shocking cases
- ₦50 per photocopy
- ₦100 for normal printing
- ₦500 for coloured printing
These high prices were targeted especially at new students who didn’t know the normal rates.
“This Is Not Business This Is Exploitation”
President Chika described the situation as painful and unacceptable. He stated clearly that what is happening is not business, but pure exploitation of innocent students.
To address the issue immediately, the SUG confiscated the tools and devices of those involved in the extortion.
He emphasized that EBSU must remain a safe and fair environment, and that the efforts of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Michael Ugota Awoke, to maintain order must not be undermined by greed.
Warning to All Business Owners
The SUG sent a strong message to:
- Food vendors
- POS agents
- Cyber café operators
- Other business owners around campus
Anyone who tries to exploit students will face consequences. No one will be allowed to hide under the name of “business” to take advantage of EBSU students.
A Call for Collective Change
President Chika ended his statement by saying that the change he wants to see begins with him and with all students who are ready to stand for what is right.
I kept the English simple, organized, and professional.
Comments From Students and Officials
Marvelous Elochukwu Senate President
“As Senate President, I stand firmly with the SUG President and all arms of government in condemning the exploitation of our students. What we saw during the sanitation mission is unacceptable, and strong action has already been taken.
Anyone who abuses students for profit will face consequences. We remain committed to protecting every EBSU student and keeping the environment safe and fair.
All thanks to our leader, Chika Abraham Nwuhuo-can (001).”

“The SUG Judiciary sees such actions as a serious violation of fairness and good conduct expected within our university community.
